Romanian former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu picked up in EUR 1.1 million fraud case

Călin Georgescu, the surprise first-place candidate in the 2024 presidential election, was picked up from traffic by police officers on Monday, September 21, according to Romania-Insider.com.

DIICOT prosecutors suspect the far-right, pro-Russian politician deceived several Romanian businessmen, from whom he received more than EUR 1 million, promising them that he would help them access financing from foreign banking institutions.

While Georgescu was being picked up, properties connected to him in the localities of Mogoșoaia, Ciolpani and Buftea, near Bucharest, were searched by police.

The 64-year-old is suspected of having established an organized criminal group together with others named by Digi24.

“The criminal investigation documents revealed that, in September 2021, 3 perpetrators, two Romanian citizens (aged 64 and 47) and an Italian citizen (aged 56), formed an organized criminal group that acted in a coordinated manner under the authority of the leader (a 64-year-old Romanian citizen), mainly on the territory of Romania, but also in Great Britain, to obtain unjust patrimonial benefits,” DIICOT said in a press release.

Prosecutors claim that the leader of the group assigned the other two members clear roles within the criminal mechanism he had devised, presenting them as prosperous businessmen, administrators of foreign companies that allegedly had large sums of money available to lend to injured parties who intended to develop their businesses in Romania.

The alleged fraud scheme was based on the promise of obtaining loans from foreign financial institutions. The victims were told that they could receive financing worth millions of euros, but that, in order to access the money, they first had to provide guarantees, also in cash.

Investigators claim that starting in September 2021, the three convinced a businessman that he could obtain a loan of EUR 6 million in exchange for providing a guarantee. The victim allegedly transferred more than EUR 1 million.

Subsequently, the suspects allegedly told him that the financing could be increased to EUR 15 million, but that an additional guarantee was required. Following this promise, the businessman allegedly transferred another EUR 100,000.

This would be the third criminal case against Călin Georgescu, in addition to those in which he is accused of Legionary propaganda and attempting a coup, alongside mercenary Horațiu Potra.

The leader of the extremist Alliance for the Union of Romanians party, George Simion, a supporter of Georgescu, reacted to the probe. “Any one of us could be next. Stop the abuses! Romania is a dictatorship!,” George Simion wrote on Facebook.

In recent years, political figure Călin Georgescu has found himself at the center of growing judicial scrutiny in Romania. Known for his ultranationalist rhetoric and controversial public positions, Călin Georgescu’s legal standing has shifted from political debates to high-profile prosecutor dockets. Investigated across multiple files involving national security, illegal political financing, and large-scale financial fraud, his judicial troubles illustrate the complex intersection of populist politics, public influence, and law enforcement in Romania.

The Recent DIICOT Operation: Fraud and Organized Crime

The most significant recent development occurred when DIICOT prosecutors intercepted Călin Georgescu and conducted multiple searches across Bucharest and Ilfov County.

  1. The €1.1 Million Fraud Allegation: According to prosecutor disclosures, the case revolves around an organized scheme where victims were misled into making substantial investments based on unfulfilled promises of larger financial returns.

  2. Coordinated Searches: Law enforcement executed search warrants across multiple locations (including Mogoșoaia, Ciolpani, and Buftea) to collect physical and digital evidence regarding financial transactions and organizational ties.

  3. Procedural Status: Prosecutors have emphasized that, throughout all investigative steps, all individuals under investigation maintain their statutory rights, including the presumption of innocence.

Ideological Controversies and Electoral Audits

Beyond financial inquiries, Călin Georgescu has faced legal scrutiny regarding his public messaging and political operations:

  • Promoting Extremist Ideology: Inquiries were previously opened following public statements praising figures associated with the interwar Legionnaire movement and historical fascism. Under Romanian legislation, promoting fascist, racist, or xenophobic symbols and doctrine carries strict criminal penalties.

  • Campaign Transparency Inquiries: Electoral authorities and state prosecutors have examined the transparency of his political promotion, focusing on online communication networks and undeclared funding sources utilized during election cycles.

Political Impact and Judicial Process

The accumulation of criminal cases involving Călin Georgescu highlights the challenges state institutions face when addressing non-traditional political actors. While his supporters view the investigations through a political lens, judicial authorities maintain that the actions are grounded in rigorous evidence collection, fraud protection, and strict adherence to the penal code. As legal proceedings continue, these cases represent a crucial test of judicial impartiality and financial oversight in Romania.
