Flights to Athens from Cluj and Timișoara

The Romanian airline Animawings has further strengthened air connections between Romania and Greece, while simultaneously announcing a significant expansion of its European network for the summer season of 2026, according to Tornos News.

Of particular interest to the Greek market are the routes to Athens, as the airline has already launched, since 5 April, year-round services from Cluj and Timișoara to Athens, with two weekly flights from each city.

This move further enhances the connectivity of the Greek capital with two of Romania’s most important regional urban centers, creating new prospects for both leisure tourism and business travel. At the same time, increased air accessibility is expected to support the flow of Romanian visitors to Athens and Greece more broadly.

As part of its summer network expansion, Animawings will launch seven new European routes, with all flights operated using Airbus A220-300 aircraft.

From Bucharest, the company will launch:

  • flights to Rotterdam starting 13 July, with two weekly frequencies
  • services to Strasbourg starting 17 August, also twice weekly

At the same time, from Cluj, new connections to Frankfurt and Vienna will be added from 17 July, with two weekly flights on each route.

Similarly, Timișoara will gain new flights to Copenhagen and Rotterdam from 15 July, also with two weekly frequencies.

In the highly volatile landscape of Eastern European aviation, where low-cost giants and struggling flag carriers constantly battle for dominance, a distinct corporate identity is rare. However, over the last few years, AnimaWings has carved out a unique and highly successful niche for itself. Operating as a specialized Romanian leisure airline, AnimaWings has transformed the way Romanian travellers reach their holiday destinations, evolutionarily shifting from a tactical charter operator into a prominent scheduled carrier.

By blending the operational flexibility of a charter airline with the customer-centric approach of a boutique carrier, the company has managed to thrive, proving that vision and strategic partnerships can elevate a local brand onto the European aviation stage.

1. The Genesis: Catering to the Modern Holidaymaker

Founded in 2019, AnimaWings was born out of a clear market necessity. Romania’s leading travel agencies and tour operators were facing a recurring challenge: securing reliable, high-quality lift to transport thousands of Romanian tourists to traditional holiday hotspots in the Mediterranean and the Middle East every summer.

The airline officially took to the skies in 2020, right at the onset of one of the most challenging eras in global aviation history. Despite the turbulent geopolitical and economic climate, the company persevered. Its core philosophy was embedded in its very name—Anima, meaning soul in Latin—reflecting a commitment to putting hospitality, safety, and passenger comfort back at the heart of the flying experience.

2. The Aegean Alliance: A Strategic Corporate Metamorphosis

The true turning point for AnimaWings came through its corporate restructuring and international partnerships. Recognizing the airline’s immense potential, Aegean Airlines—the national flag carrier of Greece and a prominent Star Alliance member—initially acquired a minority stake in the company, which eventually grew into a controlling 51% interest in late 2021.

This partnership injected world-class operational expertise, rigorous safety protocols, and massive synergy opportunities into the Romanian carrier. It allowed AnimaWings to seamlessly connect local Romanian airports with major Greek hubs. However, the corporate chess board shifted again when the prominent Romanian European Academy of Aviation (owned by the Christian Tour Group) reassumed full control of the airline, aiming to turn it into a powerhouse fully tailored to the local market’s expansion desires. Now, Banca Transilvania became stakeholder in AnimaWings.

Operational Snapshot and Business Architecture

AnimaWings’ resilience and growth are heavily backed by its lean business model, which maximizes aircraft utilization while maintaining premium service standards during peak holiday seasons:

Strategic Pillar / Indicator Operational Specifications & Framework
Primary Hubs & Bases Bucharest Henri Coandă (OTP), with seasonal operations from major regional airports (Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași, Brașov).
Fleet Composition Modern Airbus A320 family aircraft, optimized for medium-haul leisure routes.
Core Destinations Greece (Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Santorini), Turkey (Antalya), Egypt (Hurghada), Cyprus, and major European city breaks.
Business Model Hybrid carrier combining dedicated tour operator charter flights with direct-to-consumer scheduled ticket sales.

3. Beyond Charters: Expanding into Scheduled Flights

While charter flights for massive tour operators remain a foundational revenue stream, AnimaWings has aggressively expanded its scheduled flight portfolio. This hybrid approach enables the airline to capture independent travellers who prefer planning their own vacations rather than buying all-inclusive holiday packages.

Through an easy-to-use digital booking platform and customized baggage tiers, the airline has successfully competed against rigid ultra-low-cost carriers. Passengers frequently praise the airline for maintaining a more humane approach to customer service, refusing to weaponize hidden fees, and offering a smoother boarding experience that sets a relaxed tone for a vacation before the aircraft even leaves the tarmac.

4. Navigating the Future: Environmental Targets and Regional Growth

As the aviation industry faces strict European environmental mandates, AnimaWings is confronting the challenges of modernizing its fleet and incorporating Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) to reduce its carbon footprint per passenger-kilometre.

Furthermore, the airline’s expansion strategy focuses heavily on Romania’s developing regional airports. By offering direct seasonal flights from cities like Brașov, Iași, or Oradea, AnimaWings saves regional passengers the hassle of a long road trip to Bucharest, fundamentally decentralizing holiday travel in Romania.

The Soul of Leisure Aviation

AnimaWings stands as a testament to smart market positioning. In an era where flying has often become a commoditized, stressful experience, this boutique Romanian carrier has successfully preserved the excitement and joy traditionally associated with going on holiday.

By maintaining financial discipline, fostering local market intelligence, and adapting its corporate structure to volatile economic realities, AnimaWings has secured its position as a reliable, cherished companion for Romanian travellers. For thousands of holidaymakers, their vacation truly begins the moment they step on board the aircraft with the distinct, welcoming orange and blue wings.
