Romania investing 55,6 mln euro in Craiova, Cluj-Napoca airports

Romania’s transport ministry has signed two contracts worth a total 55.6 million euro ($54.1 million) for modernisation and upgrade projects at Craiova and Cluj-Napoca airports, according to SeeNews.com.

Craiova International Airport will receive 12 million euro to buy fire safety and prevention gear, as well as equipment that facilitates smooth runway operations in adverse weather conditions, transport minister Sorin Grindeanu said in a post on social media.

The Cluj International Airport is the beneficiary of two projects worth a total 43.6 million euro, aimed at increasing passenger safety and security of airport operations in compliance with international aviation regulation, Grindeanu said in another social media post on Wednesday.

The airport will spend 7.6 million euro to buy metal and explosives trace detection equipment, X-Ray scanners, as well as a passenger-screening system. The 36 million euro project includes the acquisition of a mobile LED tower, a plant material shredder and of equipment for removing rubber off the runway.

Projects at both airports are financed through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and must be completed by the end of 2023.
