Novel La nuit au cœur wins Choix Goncourt de Roumanie

On Thursday, December 4, the deliberation and announcement of the novel selected for the 13th edition of the Choix Goncourt de la Roumanie took place. For the 2025 edition, the students who formed the jury in Romania chose the novel La nuit au cœur/Night in the Heart by Nathacha Appanah, published by Gallimard, according to Romania Journal.

On this occasion, the six presidents of the juries from the universities participating in this program met on December 4 in Bucharest, at CEREFREA/Villa Noël, to discuss the eight books selected in the second round of the Goncourt selection:

  • Nathacha APPANAH, La nuit au cœur (Gallimard)

  • Emmanuel CARRÈRE, Kolkhoze (P.O.L)

  • Paul GASNIER, La collision (Gallimard)

  • Yanick LAHENS, Passagères de nuit (Sabine Wespieser)

  • Caroline LAMARCHE, Le bel obscur (Seuil)

  • Charif MAJDALANI, Le nom des rois (Stock)

  • Laurent MAUVIGNIER, La maison vide (Minuit)

  • Alfred de MONTESQUIOU, Le crépuscule des hommes (Robert Laffont)

The debates were moderated by Ioana Stăncescu, journalist at Radio România Internațional and author of the novels Tăcerea vine prima and Tot ce i-am promis tatălui meu, and by Roxanne Verron, editor and bookseller at the French bookstore Kyralina in Bucharest.

The Choix Goncourt de la Roumanie program gives students the opportunity to discover high-quality contemporary French literature. Around 65 students and faculty members participated in this program, coming from: the University of Bucharest, the University of Brașov, Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, the West University of Timișoara, and the University of Craiova.

The Choix Goncourt program is an international initiative led by the Académie Goncourt, designed to extend the prestige of France’s most important literary prize to young audiences worldwide. Based on the same selection of novels analyzed by the Academy’s members, francophone students and university faculty form national juries, debate the finalist titles, and select their own Choix Goncourt winner. This initiative increases the visibility of contemporary French literature, encourages critical reading, and builds a genuine bridge between the Académie Goncourt and new generations of readers as well as the international academic community.
