World Hungarians Day, celebrated in Cluj

More than 1,000 people took part in the celebration of the Day of Hungarians Abroad, 15 March. It is the anniversary of the day when Hungarians rose up to fight for freedom in 1848.

In Cluj-Napoca, the celebrations began with a parade that started in front of the Faculty of Protestant Theology at Babeș-Bolyai University. The parade was accompanied by music played by a youth orchestra.

The participants in the event walked to the building on Heroes’ Boulevard where the Polish general Jozef Bem, the most brilliant commander of the Hungarian revolutionary army, lived.

This was followed by an interfaith service in the Roman Catholic Church of St Michael, attended by representatives of the historical Hungarian denominations in Transylvania. Afterwards, representatives of the Hungarians of Cluj laid wreaths and wreaths at the building of the former Biasini Hotel, where in 1848 Hungarian revolutionaries such as Petofi Sandor and Romanians such as Nicolae Balcescu met.
