Vienna Airport welcomes a new airline: AnimaWings launches direct flights to Cluj-Napoca from July 2026

AnimaWings takes off in Austria: From July 17 2026, the Romanian airline will operate two weekly flights between Cluj-Napoca and Vienna. Using a modern Airbus A220-300, passengers can travel directly to the heart of Transylvania – Cluj is renowned for its creative scene, historic old town, and the unique atmosphere of the Transylvanian region, according to marketscreener.com.

“With AnimaWings, our airport is gaining a new European airline with fresh momentum and an attractive offering for travellers. The new connection brings more choice to our summer flight schedule, strengthens connections to major business hubs and expands our route network to Eastern Europe with an exciting destination full of unique charm – exactly the kind of cities that are increasingly sought after for city trips beyond the classic hotspots. We look forward to working with AnimaWings,” said Julian Jäger, joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport.

“We are delighted to announce our new direct service between Cluj-Napoca and Vienna, further strengthening AnimaWings’ international network and offering passengers more convenient travel options between Romania and Austria. Vienna is an important business and cultural hub, while Cluj-Napoca is one of Romania’s most dynamic and fast-growing cities, with a vibrant creative and technology scene. We are confident that this new route will attract both business and leisure travellers and we look forward to welcoming passengers onboard our modern aircraft,” said Marius Pandel, CEO AnimaWings.

Cluj-Napoca: Young, Creative, and Full of History
Cluj-Napoca captivates visitors with an extraordinary blend of historical charm, a modern creative scene, and impressive natural surroundings. The vibrant university city attracts visitors with cozy cafés, trendy restaurants, festivals, and a lively nightlife – and has long been considered one of Eastern Europe’s most exciting hidden gems for city breaks. At the same time, Cluj is the perfect starting point for exploring the fascinating region of Transylvania: medieval towns, the stunning landscapes of the Carpathian Mountains, and the world-famous legends surrounding Dracula give the region its distinctive atmosphere. Just around 30 kilometres from Cluj lies Salina Turda, one of Europe’s most extraordinary attractions – a spectacular former salt mine featuring an underground Ferris wheel, boat rides, and enormous caverns deep beneath the earth’s surface.

AnimaWings is a Romanian airline founded in 2020 and based at Bucharest Otopeni Airport, specializing in scheduled and charter flights. The airline was founded by Memento Group and operates a modern fleet including Airbus A220-300 aircraft. Its focus lies on connecting Romanian cities (such as Bucharest, Timisoara and Cluj-Napoca) with European metropolitan destinations and holiday resorts. In 2026, AnimaWings is strategically expanding its route network to strengthen connections to Germany (Munich, Frankfurt) and Austria (Vienna). For decades, the global aviation sector has looked to a select few hubs as templates for efficiency, punctuality, and strategic growth. Situated at the geographical and geopolitical crossroads of the continent, Vienna International Airport (Flughafen Wien-Schwechat) has quietly but decisively cemented its position as the premier gateway to Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).

Operating as a critical engine for the Austrian economy, the airport represents a masterclass in how modern infrastructure can seamlessly blend high-volume logistics with a premium, passenger-centric experience.

Strategic Geography: The Bridge Between East and West

Vienna International Airport’s primary competitive advantage has always been its location. Following the expansion of the European Union over the last two decades, Schwechat transformed from a peripheral western terminal into the absolute centre of the European airspace network.

The airport serves as the primary home base and mega-hub for Austrian Airlines (a key member of the Lufthansa Group) and acts as a major focus city for low-cost giants like Ryanair and Wizz Air. This unique ecosystem creates a balanced market dynamic, offering business travellers premium, high-frequency connections while simultaneously catering to the booming leisure and budget travel segments.

Infrastructure Excellence: The 2026 Modernisation Wave

The continuous development of Vienna Airport is driven by a forward-looking master plan designed to accommodate shifting passenger dynamics. The structural layout is engineered to minimise connection times, boasting one of the fastest minimum connecting times in Europe at just 25 minutes.

Key Infrastructure Dimensions and Operational Indicators

Operational Parameter Infrastructure Feature Strategic Impact
Terminal Architecture Terminal 3 & Terminal 1 Modernisation Streamlined baggage systems and automated biometrics for seamless check-ins.
Eco-Friendly Operations Austria’s largest photovoltaic (solar) fields Achieved completely carbon-neutral operations, setting an ESG benchmark.
Intermodal Connectivity Integrated high-speed underground railway station Connects passengers directly to Vienna Central Station in 15 minutes and Bratislava in under an hour.
Cargo Capabilities Vienna Airport Pharma Handling Center A dedicated, temperature-controlled facility anchoring Central Europe’s medical supply chain.

The airport’s ongoing southern expansion project of Terminal 3 highlights its adaptive nature, introducing expansive new retail zones, premium lounges, and state-of-the-art security screening areas that completely eliminate the friction of traditional travel.

The Tech-Driven Passenger Experience

Vienna International Airport consistently ranks among the top European airports in terms of service quality, a feat achieved through a heavy embrace of smart digital solutions. From AI-driven predictive queue management at security checkpoints to the widespread implementation of digital boarding gates, the airport prioritises the traveler’s time above all else.

Furthermore, Schwechat functions as an incubator for broader regional development. The surrounding “Airport City” has evolved into a thriving business district in its own right, hosting innovation hubs, conference centres, and global logistics offices.

Sustainability: Leading the Green Aviation Transition

In an era where the aviation industry faces intense scrutiny over its carbon footprint, Vienna Airport has taken a proactive leadership role. By pairing its massive on-site solar energy infrastructure with regional district heating and smart waste-management algorithms, the airport successfully serves as a blueprint for sustainable aviation operations.

Its investments are now focused on supporting the regional supply chain for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), ensuring that the hub remains viable and compliant with the stringent environmental mandates issued by the European Union.

Driving the Flow of a Connected Continent

Vienna International Airport has long outgrown its identity as a simple transit point for tourists visiting the Austrian capital. It stands as a vital piece of international infrastructure, a sophisticated economic engine, and a living testament to the power of continuous innovation. By successfully balancing geopolitical strategy, technological integration, and environmental responsibility, Vienna Airport has designed a sustainable template for global aviation—ensuring that whatever direction the future of mobility takes, all routes will continue to run through Schwechat.
