Raised by AC Milan, Andrei Coubiș (22 years old) is the new player of U Cluj and wants to play for the Romanian national team. Andrei Coubiș has represented Romania at the youth level, but then chose to try his luck in Italy, where he was „eyed” by Roberto Mancini, according to Spot Media.
U Cluj has loaned Andrei Coubiș from AC Milan, with a purchase option, and he has arrived at the team’s training camp in Antalya. Upon arrival, Coubiș stated that he wants to play for the Romanian national team under the command of Mircea Lucescu.
“I came because I think it’s a very important stage in my career, I hope to help the team. It wasn’t a difficult choice. I came with the intention to play and do it as well as possible. (…)
Naturally, I am one hundred percent thinking about the Romanian national team. I hope to be called up to the national team,” said Andrei Coubiș, according to Digi Sport.
Andrei Coubiș was also wanted by Dinamo in the summer, as well as by Universitatea Craiova.
The Milanese Foundation
Born in Milan to Romanian parents, Andrei Coubiș is a product of the prestigious Milanello academy. Standing at 1,89 m, his physical profile earned him the nickname “The Beast” among youth scouts. During his time with AC Milan’s U19 squad, Coubiș wasn’t just a physical presence; he was a leader, wearing the captain’s armband and guiding the team through high-pressure UEFA Youth League encounters.
His versatility—the ability to play both as a commanding center-back and a defensive right-back—made him a favorite of Stefano Pioli during first-team training sessions. However, the path to the senior starting XI at a club like Milan is notoriously narrow, leading to his strategic move to Genoa to join Sampdoria.
The International Tug-of-War
One of the most discussed aspects of Andrei Coubiș’s career hasn’t been his tackles, but his jersey. In 2023, the defender made headlines by politely declining a call-up to the Romanian U21 national team, signaling a desire to represent Italy.
In Romania, he is viewed as the potential pillar of the national defense for the next decade; in Italy, he is one of several elite talents fighting for a spot in a crowded defensive stable.
