Dan Petrescu denies cancer rumors, confirms good health

Concerns about the health of Dan Petrescu (59), former Jeonbuk Hyundai manager and Chelsea ‘legend,’ which surprised football fans, have been confirmed as unfounded. Despite rumors of a cancer battle spreading and causing worry, it has been reported that the individual is doing well without major issues, according to The Chosun Daily.

The British ‘Daily Mail’ reported on the 3rd (local time) that the claim about the Chelsea legend and former defender Dan Petrescu receiving a cancer diagnosis was not factual. BBC Sport journalist Nizar Kinselwa stated via social media, “Former Chelsea legend Dan Petrescu does not have cancer. I can confirm that everything is fine after the report.”

Concerns about Petrescu began in December of last year. News spread that he had lost nearly 30kg due to an unidentified illness, with foreign media reporting, “He had become unrecognizably thin.” This was compounded by reports that his daughters had urgently flown to Romania to be by his side, rapidly spreading health rumors.

After retiring, Petrescu continued his coaching career and was most recently manager of Romanian powerhouse CFR Cluj, but stepped down in August of last year. During this process, former Cluj owner Cristian Balai stated, “Petrescu was undergoing various treatments for recovery and had even received traditional Chinese medicine treatment at one point.”

Additionally, Romanian Professional Football League President Gino Iorgulescu mentioned to local media, “Petrescu is receiving cancer treatment,” making the situation appear more serious. However, this cancer rumor has now been clarified as a misunderstanding following BBC’s confirmation.

Born in Bucharest, Petrescu played 208 matches for Chelsea alone, winning two FA Cups, a League Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, and a UEFA Super Cup, becoming a symbolic fullback for the club. In England, he also played for Sheffield Wednesday, Bradford City, and Southampton, and continued his career in Italy and Romania. In Romania, he experienced league victory and, in 1989, reached the European Cup final with Steaua Bucharest.
