Romania’s CFR in 325 mln euro deal with Arcada-Alstom tie-up

Romanian railway operator CFR said that it has signed a 1.61 billion lei ($346.3 million/325.5 million euro) contract for the upgrade of the Cluj-Napoca – Aghires railway section with a consortium of local construction company Arcada and French multinational rolling stock manufacturer Alstom, according to SeeNews.com.

The overhaul works on the 30.4 km long section have to be designed and executed within 42 months, CFR said in a press release.

The financing will be provided from non-reimbursable EU funds under Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

The infrastructure and superstructure of the railway section will be upgraded in order to allow for a maximum travel speed of 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains. The works also comprise modernisation of a number of train stations and utility and maintenance buildings.

The rehabilitation of the Aghires-Poieni section is part of a project to upgrade the entire Cluj Napoca-Oradea-Episcopia Bihor-Frontiera railway line which is 166.2 km long.

Last week, CFR announced that it signed a 1.53 billion lei contract for the upgrade of the Aghires-Poieni railway section with the Arcada-Alstom consortium.
