The ”1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia has signed a partnership agreement with China’s Shandong Jiaotong University, Rector Daniel Breaz announced, stating that he took part in the ”China – CEEC Dialogue on the Integration of Science, Education and Industry & Industrial Talent Cultivation”, a forum aimed at strengthening cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European states in education, research and industrial development, according to Agrepres.
”During this event, we signed the partnership agreement between the ”1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia and Shandong Jiaotong University, a leading institution in Shandong province with an academic tradition dating back to 1956, more than 23,000 students and an active presence in international research and education networks”, Daniel Breaz wrote on Facebook.
He said the agreement, signed together with Rector Kong Weijin, creates a concrete framework for academic mobility, joint research projects and long-term institutional cooperation.
”The internationalisation of a university is not built through declarations – it develops through dialogue, presence and real academic cooperation. The University of Alba Iulia is building such relationships across all meridians: in Europe, in the Euro-Atlantic space and increasingly in Asia. This collaboration is a concrete step in a broader process of opening toward the global academic space and strengthening our international profile”, Rector Daniel Breaz added.
Founded in 1991, the ”1 Decembrie 1918” University was included in January in the QS World University Rankings: Europe 2026, where it ranks 99th among Eastern European universities and is placed in the 701 – 900 band at European level.
As the world experiences an unprecedented revolution in smart transport, high-speed rail networks, and autonomous logistics, the institutions anchoring these industrial sectors have taken centre stage. In the heart of China’s coastal economic engine lies Shandong Jiaotong University (SDJU)—a specialized public institution that has quietly spent the last several decades cementing its position as a primary incubator for international transport engineering and intelligent mobility.
Operating across multiple modern campuses in Jinan, the “City of Springs,” and the maritime hub of Weihai, SDJU stands as a masterclass in how targeted academic specialization can drive regional industrial dominance and global academic cooperation.
From Maritime Roots to a Multidisciplinary Powerhouse
Founded in 1956, SDJU’s origins are deeply intertwined with communist China’s post-war infrastructure development. Initially established to address a critical shortage of transport professionals, the institution has evolved from a specialized engineering school into a comprehensive, multidisciplinary university.
Today, while it maintains an ironclad reputation in fields like road engineering, naval architecture, and logistics, the university successfully bridges these technical roots with faculties in management, economics, humanities, and digital arts.
The university’s geographical distribution across Shandong province serves a highly strategic purpose:
[Wuningshan & Changqing Campuses - Jinan] ───> Focus: Aerospace, Civil Engineering, Autonomous Automotive Systems
[Weihai Campus] ────────────────────────────> Focus: Maritime Studies, Naval Architecture, International Programs
Academic Infrastructure: A Nexus of Practical Innovation
What separates SDJU from standard polytechnic institutions is its intense integration with industrial manufacturing giants and state-level engineering projects. The university does not merely teach transport; it actively designs the frameworks running modern infrastructure.
Faculty Strengths and Key Engineering Domains
| College / Department | Specialized Focus Area | Industry Significance |
| Automobile Engineering | Electric Vehicles (EVs), Intelligent Connected Vehicles (ICVs) | Partners directly with domestic EV manufacturers to develop autonomous driving algorithms. |
| Civil Engineering | Bridges, Tunnels, High-Speed Rail Subgrades | Contributes structural research to China’s expanding high-speed rail and highway networks. |
| Maritime Studies | Ocean Engineering, Navigation Technology, Port Logistics | Certified by international maritime authorities, producing world-class captains and logistics directors. |
| Aviation & Aerospace | Aircraft Maintenance, Drone Fleet Management | Addresses the booming demand for low-altitude economy logistics and commercial aviation. |
The campus boasts state-of-the-art laboratory environments, including automated driving test tracks, simulated shipping bridges, and structural stress-testing facilities that allow students to transition seamlessly from theoretical blueprints to heavy industrial applications.
A Globally Connected Campus: The International Outlook
In the mid-2020s, SDJU has aggressively expanded its international footprint, positioning itself as a welcoming hub for global talent. Recognizing that transport and logistics are inherently borderless industries, the university has established joint educational ventures, student exchange frameworks, and research partnerships with over 100 high-profile universities across Russia, the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom and Eastern Europe.
For international students, SDJU offers specialized English-taught programs, particularly in Civil Engineering and International Logistics. Moreover, the university provides robust scholarship ecosystems, including the prestigious Chinese Government Scholarship and the Shandong Provincial Government Scholarship, aimed at attracting top-tier engineering minds from developing nations along the “Belt and Road” initiative.
Nurturing Talent for the Intelligent Era
As transport systems rely heavily on Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, and DeepTech solutions, SDJU has undergone a sweeping digital curriculum overhaul. Students are no longer just learning mechanical engineering; they are mastering data analytics, sensor fusion, and V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication frameworks.
This forward-thinking educational model ensures that SDJU graduates are highly sought after by global tech companies, state shipping corporations, and international civil engineering consortia, consistently securing employment rates that rank among the highest in the province.
Conclusion: Driving the Global Flow
Shandong Jiaotong University stands as a testament to the power of educational focus. By keeping its eyes firmly fixed on the horizon of human and cargo mobility, the institution has transformed itself from a local technical school into an indispensable pillar of global industrial infrastructure. As the world moves toward a green, automated, and hyper-connected transport future, the engineers, captains, and innovators graduating from the halls of SDJU will undoubtedly be the ones sitting in the driver’s seat.
