Lidl opens new logistics centre in Portugal, expands in Romania

German supermarket chain Lidl has opened a new €115-million logistics centre in Loures, Portugal. The 54,000 square metre facility boasts a 44,000 pallet storage capacity, 111 loading docks, and can supply 100 stores, according to European Supermarket Magazine.

The discounter has incorporated various sustainability measures, such as photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting, natural gas cooling, and chargers for electric vehicles, earning it a BREEAM certification.

It is Lidl’s fifth warehouse in Portugal and joins existing locations in Santo Tirso, Torres Novas, Palmela, and Sintra. The former logistics centre in Sintra will be repurposed as the company’s operational support centre.

This investment underscores Lidl’s commitment to Portugal, where it has invested around €2 billion since 1995 and opened 280 supermarkets, employing 9,000 people.

Lidl plays a significant role in Portugal‘s economy by exporting €156 million worth of Portuguese agricultural products to the discounter’s stores across 29 European countries each year.

Expansion In Romania

Meanwhile, Lidl continues to expand its network in Romania. It has opened 12 new stores in the first two months of 2025, bringing its total to 377 outlets.

Lidl has strengthened its presence in Romania from major cities like Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, Suceava, Ploiești, Sibiu, and Galați, to smaller towns like Cisnădie, Hârșova, and Câmpina.

Lidl is a renowned German multinational retail chain, part of the Schwarz Group, which is one of the largest retailers in the world. Established in the 1930s, Lidl has grown to operate thousands of stores across Europe and beyond, offering a wide range of high-quality products at competitive prices.

Known for its efficient business model, Lidl focuses on simplicity and cost-effectiveness, which allows it to provide customers with excellent value for money. The stores typically feature a streamlined layout, offering a curated selection of groceries, household items, and seasonal products. Lidl also places a strong emphasis on sustainability, with initiatives aimed at reducing food waste, promoting eco-friendly packaging, and sourcing responsibly.

In addition to its retail operations, Lidl is committed to supporting local communities through various social responsibility programmes. These include partnerships with charities, educational initiatives, and efforts to promote healthier lifestyles.

The company has also prioritised bringing stores to smaller communities, with recent openings in Bascov, Hărman, and Bolintin-Vale.

With plans to open 25 more stores by the end of this year, Lidl focuses on sustainable practices with technologies like green rooftops and energy-efficient lighting in its new stores.

It aims to achieve NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) certification in new locations like Cluj-Napoca.

Lidl has significantly ramped up its expansion plans in Romania, aiming to open 200 new stores by 2030.
