Wizz Air adds aircraft and new routes at Sibiu base for 2025

The Hungarian carrier Wizz Air is extending its operations in Romania. Adding a second aircraft to its Sibiu base, the Transylvanian city’s capacity has increased by 58%, with more than 320,000 extra seats available for the summer of 2025, according to Travel Radar.

The new routes will connect Sibiu to Vienna, Hamburg, Frankfurt-Hahn, Basel, Rome-Fiumicino, and Madrid. Wizz Air, which began operating in Romania in 2006, has increased its investment there and now connects travellers to 72 destinations in 24 countries, with 169 routes operated from 13 airports in the country.

The airline has set up six operating bases in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Timișoara, Craiova, and Sibiu during the last eighteen years. It now employs more than 1,500 people.

Alongside the routes, Wizz Air will expand the number of flights to Memmingen (daily), Nuremberg, and Baden-Baden (four times a week).

Local leaders have praised the expansion.

Vlad Vasiu, Vice President of the Sibiu County Council called the expansion: “an important step towards strengthening regional and international links. This expansion opens up new travel opportunities for the inhabitants of Sibiu County and the entire region, facilitating direct access to destinations around the world.”

Echoing these sentiments, Marius Ioan Gerdea, General Manager of Sibiu International Airport said: “We are a united and dedicated team, which has worked tenaciously and discreetly to achieve our goals. We remain committed to our mission of connecting people with their favourite destinations, and today is, in our opinion, just the beginning of a promising phase.”

Since commencing operations in Romania in 2006, Wizz Air has continuously expanded its network and services, recognising the country as a key market.

Bases and Fleet

Wizz Air operates from six bases in Romania, located in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Timișoara, Craiova and Sibiu. The airline has allocated a substantial number of aircraft to these bases, with a total of 21 aircraft stationed in Bucharest alone by 2025. This expansion aims to enhance connectivity between Romania and various destinations across Europe and beyond.

Routes and Destinations

Wizz Air offers an extensive network of routes from Romania, operating 175 routes from 13 airports in the country. The airline connects passengers to 72 destinations in 24 countries, providing a wide range of travel options. Notable routes include flights from Bucharest to Gran Canaria, Frankfurt Hahn, and Friedrichshafen, as well as increased frequencies on existing routes to cities such as Dortmund, Memmingen, and Stuttgart.

Economic Impact

The presence of Wizz Air in Romania has had a positive economic impact, creating jobs and stimulating tourism. The airline employs over 1,500 people in Romania and continues to invest in the local economy.
