Moldova, A European country

Moldova is one of the countries that decided to get out of the grey zone and return home to the big family of European countries. In 2022, the Republic of Moldova was granted official candidate status and the year 2023 means the start of accession negotiations. This is a process that will change the DNA of Moldova’s society. Accession negotiations mean that the European Union will allocate funds to modernise Moldovan society so that it can integrate as smoothly as possible. But these funds come with conditions: the Republic of Moldova must make the necessary reforms to become compatible with the rest of the EU.

Moldova deserves this status. It has proved that it is a European country in the deepest sense of the word in the context of the Ukrainian refugee crisis. Moldova was the country that received the most refugees in relation to the number of inhabitants. The commitment of the current leadership in Chisinau is also profound.

Moldova’s integration will be easier than Romania’s. This is because Romania has assumed the role of Moldova’s main advocate. European legislation has already been translated into Romanian and only needs to be transposed into Moldovan domestic law.

Moreover, the Romanian authorities are willing to transfer to Moldova the institutional experience gained during Romania’s EU accession negotiations and in the years since Romania became a full member of the European Community in 2007. Romania’s commitment to Moldova is so complete that jests on this matter can be heard in Brussels. One such jest is that Moldova is the only country with two foreign ministries, one in Chișinău and one in Bucharest.

But the most important vector of Moldova’s Europeanisation is the Romanian Royal Family. This is because the historical position of the Royal Family does not change after elections, it is not conditioned by opinion polls or social trends. The Royal Family of Romania has assumed its historic role of returning Moldova to where it belongs: in the free and democratic world.

After all, the Royal Family of Romania is consistent with itself in this matter as well. Her Majesty Margareta, the rightful Queen of Romania, and His Royal Highness Prince Consort Radu of Romania are only continuing the struggle of King Carol I, King Ferdinand I, King Carol II and King Mihai I. The role of the Royal Family in Romania’s accession to the European Union was a decisive one. The same will be true for Moldova. And accession to the European Union will bring closer both the reunification of the Romanian nation and the restoration of the monarchy in a united, prosperous, democratic and European kingdom.
