The country’s high nature value farmland (HNVF) represents over 30% of the total farmland in Romania, says Romania-Insider.com.
The HNVF is located is Transylvania, Maramures, the Carpathian hills, and south-western Romania, where traditional agriculture represents the main economic activity and is a key factor in preserving nature.
The payment for this type of land should be extended and better planned, so that farmers would receive a more efficient support, according to the organizations. These payments currently support only 40% of Romania’s high nature value farmland, namely two million hectares of an estimated total of five million hectares.
