Kurt Zouma signs for Al-Wasl following CFR Cluj contract termination

Kurt Zouma has joined Al-Wasl after terminating his CFR Cluj contract, with the 31-year-old moving to the United Arab Emirates top flight. Al-Wasl announced the signing, according to One Fotball.

The former Chelsea and West Ham defender becomes part of a side currently fifth in the league. Trained at Saint-Étienne, the France international has 11 caps and one goal.

After a 2024-2025 loan at Saudi club Al-Orobah, the free agent signed a two-year deal with CFR Cluj on Wednesday, three September.

Only five months later he left Romania citing unpaid wages, ending his contract and becoming a free agent.

He made four appearances for Cluj, three in the league and one in the national cup.

A physical phenomenon: The “La Zouma” style

Standing at 1.90m, Zouma is a prototype of the elite modern defender. His career, spanning major European clubs like Saint-Étienne, Chelsea, and West Ham United, has been defined by his extraordinary recovery speed and his nearly unbeatable aerial win rate.

  • Aerial Dominance: Kurt Zouma consistently ranks in the top percentile for headed clearances and offensive aerial threats during set-pieces.

  • The Power of Recovery: Despite a serious knee injury early in his career, he retained the explosive pace needed to catch attackers in transition, a trait that made him a favorite under various tactical systems.

Tactical evolution: From prospect to leader

Kurt Zouma’s journey through the Premier League has seen him evolve from a raw, athletic talent at Chelsea into a communicative leader. His ability to organize a backline and his reading of the game have become his trademarks as he entered his veteran years.

  1. Positional Intelligence: Under managers like José Mourinho and David Moyes, Zouma refined his sense of timing, knowing exactly when to step out of the line to intercept and when to drop deep to cover space.

  2. Distribution: While primarily known for his defensive grit, Kurt Zouma developed a reliable long-range passing game, often initiating attacks by switching play to the wingers.

Techsylvania returns on June 24-25
