Russian opera singer Anna Netrebko’s planned concert in Cluj-Napoca will not take place, according to prm.ua.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported this.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the decision was made possible thanks to the efforts of the Ukrainian Embassy in Romania and public activists.
“By canceling Netrebko’s performance, the Romanian side demonstrated understanding and solidarity with Ukraine in the context of countering Russia’s hybrid influence over so-called ‘cultural and artistic events,’” the statement read.
The concert, scheduled for October 6, was to be held in collaboration with the Transylvanian Philharmonic Orchestra. Netrebko was also expected to receive an Honorary Doctorate from the Gheorghe Dima National Academy of Music.
The agency recalled that Ukraine imposed sanctions against the singer due to her public support for Russian policies.
“As long as Russia is waging a war of aggression and bloodshed, and its troops commit war crimes daily, international isolation must continue. Culture cannot be used as a tool for whitewashing the aggressor’s reputation,” the Foreign Ministry stated.
