The hospital includes 23 inpatient beds and four operating theatres built to international standards, featuring HEPA-filtered air systems and positive pressure environments to reduce the risk of infection. It will initially offer advanced ophthalmic surgeries — including laser, retina, lens, glaucoma, and vitrectomy procedures — with other medical specialties to be introduced gradually. The hospital is also in the process of securing authorisation to perform corneal transplants.
“This project crowns nearly 15 years of working with patients in Alba and across Transylvania. It fills a major gap in access to complex ophthalmic procedures in the region,” said Dr. Teodor Holhoș, the network’s founder. “Our goal is to bring top-tier medical care closer to patients, eliminating the need to travel to cities like Cluj or Sibiu for specialist treatment.”
Once fully operational, the hospital will offer services across 22 medical specialties, including general and vascular surgery, internal medicine, neurosurgery, ENT, urology, endocrinology, gynaecology, dermatology, psychology and others. All ophthalmology consultations across the Dr. Holhoș network are covered by Romania’s National Health Insurance House (CNAS), with further CNAS coverage expected to extend to the new hospital’s broader services.
This investment is part of the ongoing expansion of the Dr. Holhoș brand, which currently includes six clinics in cities such as Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu, Târgu Mureș and Mediaș, along with 14 optical practices throughout Transylvania. With an annual turnover exceeding EUR 11 million, Dr. Holhoș is the most recognised and most preferred eye care brand in Romania, according to a study conducted by Reveal Marketing Research.
More than 220,000 patients have been treated within the network so far, and in 2024 alone, Dr. Holhoș personally performed over 5,500 surgeries. Total investments in the network to date exceed EUR 16 million.
