Cluj surgeon who told patients ‘to assume the George Michael position‘ can keep his job

A surgeon who swore at patients and nurses during a string of tirades at an hospital is to keep his job after his behaviour was blamed on ‘material cultural differences‘ because he is from Romania, according to StockDailyDish.com

Consultant Serban Gheorghiu, 59, shocked staff with crude jokes such as asking patients to assume ‘the George Michael position‘ whenever they had to get on all fours for intimate endoscopy examinations.

The married father of two reportedly spoke of ‘never taking women from behind‘ and told one male nurse he would take him to where they could ‘crack the pelvises‘ of women as they were ‘very small and fragile.‘

One nurse at Scarborough General Hospital in North Yorkshire claimed she was reduced to tears by Gheorghiu‘s foul letter outbursts.

He asked one female ward sister if she had had ‘rough sex,‘ referred to fellow doctors as ‘f****** b******‘ branded the coffee and management as ‘s***‘ or ‘b*******‘ and told one patient who had cancer that they cannot ‘sweep it under the f****** table‘.

The incidents between October 2015 and August 2017 occurred whilst Gheorghiu, whose wife is a GP, was working as a ColoRectal surgeon treating cancer patients and those with functional bowel disorders.

He had previously been given two final written warnings for using similar language towards staff and was also given a warning by the General Medical Council.

At the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service in Manchester Gheorghiu was found guilty of misconduct – but colleagues gave character references blaming his conduct on the fact that English was his second language. Originally from the North Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca, he had moved to the UK in 1992.

Gheorghiu was suspended from practice for nine months despite the GMC calling him for him to be struck off the medical register.

He is currently working at a hospital in Doncaster where he has treated patients for 13 months without incident and did not attend the disciplinary hearing.
