Orange Romania now has 5G/5G+ coverage in 50 cities

Orange Romania has expanded and improved its 5G/5G+ services in 6 new cities in recent months, most recently Ploiești, Deva, Targoviste, Calarasi, Giurgiu, plus coverage extension in Cluj-Napoca. This new network advancement comes as further confirmation of the renewal of the fastest mobile network certification in Romania, according to Business Review.

By the end of 2024, Orange had made the largest investment in 5G spectrum in Romania: around €265 million. After acquiring the 25-year licenses in 2022, it became the operator with the largest spectrum portfolio, taking on the most obligations to cover the national territory. At the moment, 5G/5G+ services can be accessed in 50 cities, with eight new cities added in the last six months. Also, in December 2024-January 2025, coverage in Cluj-Napoca reached 100%, including the surrounding localities.

These network upgrades result in faster internet browsing speeds on mobile devices: apps, websites and smart home devices can be accessed almost instantaneously through 5G/5G+ technology; video streaming now has much higher quality, files can be transmitted much faster. But the new technology also means a much more stable connection in crowded places.

Cluj-Napoca is a good example of these improvements: the average download speed recorded is 260 Mbps, an increase of 32%, and the upload speed has increased by 73% (64 Mbps on average). One of the most important benefits that come with this coverage upgrade is the increase in indoor mobile internet and phone signal: from 58% to 93%.

5G/5G+ also means greener networks. As the bulk of traffic shifts from 4G, we will see significant drops in power consumption, with up to 10 times less per bit of traffic than previous technologies. At the same time, on the one hand 5G networks can also implement ways to save energy when not in use, and on the other hand they can decongest 4G traffic in congested places.

The effectiveness of plans to expand 5G/5G+ services is also confirmed by the latest tests: Orange was again recognized as the #1 network in Romania for mobile internet and voice services. Independent external auditor LCC International has renewed the certification as the best mobile network at the end of 2024. The quality of the network was confirmed through a set of performance measurements carried out in 40 metropolitan areas, as well as on the roads between localities, between November 11 and December 15, 2024.

The tests involved tracking performance metrics for voice and data services, namely Voice ove LTE, Voice over 3G & 2G, web browsing, YouTube video streaming, HTTP file download and upload services. Measurements were performed on smartphones compatible with 5G/4G+/4G/3G/2G networks.

A more efficient and faster network also means new connections, opportunities and communities. People with common interests, values and passions are brought closer through connectivity. As the new Orange campaign says, “passions take the next level in the fastest network”.

“For Orange Romania, innovation has always been the constant element, which has meant access to the latest technologies at almost the same pace as other EU countries. That’s why the upgrade plans will continue this year in several localities: 5G/5G+ expansion, 100% coverage in as many cities as possible, as well as the improvement of the fixed services network. There are many cities in Romania that aim to achieve climate neutrality as soon as possible and have implemented many technologies that have introduced them into the national smart cities network. 5G/5G+ enables the deployment of a whole ecosystem of sensors and smart devices: Internet of Things technologies related to health, energy, environment, road infrastructure, electric cars. It also encourages home users to bring more smart devices into their homes. However, a faster and more reliable network means above all better living and working conditions, an experience that offers more room for personal development, whether we are talking about hobbies or profession”, said Marius Maican, Technology Director Orange Romania.
