Ministry of Energy: Over 870 million lei for the modernization of district heating pipes in Ploiești, Cluj-Napoca, Oradea and Sânmartin

The Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, signed 6 new contracts for the modernization of district heating networks in Ploiești, Cluj-Napoca, Oradea and the commune of Sânmartin, with a total value of over 870 million lei (175 million euros), through the Modernization Fund, according to The Diplomat.

Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, said: “More than a technical necessity, the modernization of district heating networks is essential for achieving sustainable development objectives and means an investment in the well-being of our communities, to ensure optimal thermal comfort in Romanians’ homes.

Through this financing program for the modernization of district heating networks, we want to support projects that aim to increase energy efficiency, reduce polluting emissions and improve the quality of life of citizens. Investments in the modernization of district heating systems will bring multiple benefits, including: optimizing thermal energy consumption, reducing heating costs for consumers, reducing pollution and improving air quality, increasing safety in the operation of facilities, supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Romania is a European champion in attracting non-reimbursable financing from the Modernization Fund, as a result of the efforts of the last two years, and we will continue to support the modernization of the Romanian energy system through this historic opportunity that our country has”.

Investments in the Thermal Energy Networks of Cluj-Napoca

The City Hall of Cluj-Napoca has initiated major investments to modernise and upgrade the city’s district heating system. These projects aim to increase energy efficiency, reduce costs for consumers and minimise environmental impact.

Main Projects

  1. Retehnologizarea procesului de producere, transport și distribuție a energiei termice în SACET Cluj-Napoca:
    • The Someș Nord Thermal Zone Plant (CTZ) will be reconfigured to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
    • The total value of this project is 353.6 million lei, with 248.7 million lei financed from the modernisation fund.
  2. Modernisation of heating pipes:
    • Old and corroded pipes will be replaced with new, high-performance ones, which will reduce heat losses and contribute to lowering costs for consumers.
    • The project is funded by both the local budget and European sources.
  3. Implementation of a digital monitoring system:
    • A digital monitoring system will be installed to efficiently manage the district heating network.
