TIFF 2024 announces international competitions and Romanian Days lineups

Twelve first and sophomore features, including Where Elephants Go by Romanian directors Cătălin Rotaru and Gabi Virginia Șarga, have been selected for the Official Competition of the 23rd Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF), which will be held in Cluj-Napoca, Romania 14 – 24 June 2024, according to Film New Europe.

Ten titles were selected for the What’s Up Doc? Competition, while the Romanian Days lineup includes 12 feature films and 10 short films competing for three awards: Best Feature Film, Best Debut and Best Short Film. Additionally, seven feature and long documentary films, as well as 10 short films, will screen out of competition in Romanian Days.

“The films of the Official Competition are, for the most part, about atypical, nonconformist characters, about their reactions to social pressures and the need for connection, affirmation, or independence: intimate dramas, absurd comedies, unconventional melodramas, or family chronicles of different calibers, with a slight predilection for stories with and about young people at crossroads,” Mihai Chirilov, the artistic director of TIFF, said in a statement.

The festival is organised by the Association for the Promotion of Romanian Film and the Transilvania Film Festival Association with support from the Ministry of Culture, the Romanian Film Centre (CNC), the Cluj-Napoca City Hall and Local Council, the Romanian Cultural InstituteDacin Sara, Romanian Filmmakers’ Union (UCIN), the Department of Interethnic Relations – DRI, Florești Commune City Hall and Creative Europe – MEDIA.
