Alstom secures contract for Cluj-Napoca metro project in Romania

In a momentous development, Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has entered into a significant contract with the Cluj-Napoca City Hall for the construction of Cluj-Napoca Metro Line 1 in Romania. This state-of-the-art turnkey project, valued at approximately €1.8 billion, will be executed as a consortium comprising Alstom, Gulermak, and Arcada. Alstom’s share in this endeavor amounts to around €400 million, according to Steel Guru.

Alstom’s responsibilities encompass a comprehensive range of tasks, including system integration, signalling and telecommunication, power supply and track work, platform doors, security and control center, and the implementation of robust cybersecurity measures. Notably, Alstom will introduce its advanced Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system, leveraging the Urbalis solution, enabling the highest level of automation (GoA4) ever seen in Romania.

The Cluj-Napoca Metro Line 1, spanning 21 kilometers and featuring 19 underground stations, is slated to be completed over the course of eight years. The initial section, covering just over 9 kilometers and comprising nine stations along with an above-ground depot, will be financed through Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and is expected to be finalized within four years.

Upon its completion, the Cluj-Napoca Metro will stand as Romania’s first fully automated metro line. Alstom’s turnkey metro system, encompassing an integrated control center, the cutting-edge Urbalis CBTC technology enabling driverless operation with 90-second headways, and a state-of-the-art cybersecurity platform, will revolutionize mobility in Cluj-Napoca, providing frequent, reliable, and energy-efficient transportation along the west-east corridor.

Gian Luca Erbacci, President of Alstom Europe Region, expressed his immense pride in Alstom’s participation in this ambitious infrastructure project. Highlighting the company’s leadership in sustainable urban mobility, he emphasized the opportunity to showcase their expertise and innovation in the Romanian market with the introduction of a driverless metro system. Gian Luca Erbacci affirmed that the Cluj-Napoca Metro project stands as one of the most significant turnkey initiatives in Europe.
